Painting in Amed, Bali with Flora Bowley and friends: Dr Fauziah

I just got back from a 9 day painting retreat in beautiful Amed, Bali with Flora Bowley and 16 other artists from all over the world.

It was inspiring as I had never really seen myself as an artist. I only started painting on canvas in September last year after returning from the Implantology Course. I suppose it came quite naturally for me as I have been creating for years … not on canvas but creating smiles every single day!

Flora Bowley is an reknowned artist based in Portland, Oregon. She runs e-courses (which I took in September) on intuitive painting which simply means we paint a layer at a time without any concrete plans as to what will turn up. We just paint with what works, it may be a colour against another, it may be an image that appeared, it may be a tiny area that we like on the canvas as it unfolds.

Sixteen artists from various parts of Australia, New Zealand, England, New York, France, Berlin and I gathered on Sunday 21 March and our journey began. We painted, snorkeled, had yoga lessons every morning, went to Tirta Gangga Water Palace to sketch, renew and swim but basically we soaked in that painting intuitively was giving voice to our creative side.

One of the three I painted

Every day we started with a yoga session (unless we were to tired and wanted to sleep in!) after breakfast we’d have a session with Flora as she taught us her process to create intuitively. We then painted to our hearts’ content by the pool, taking breaks to swim or relax and get to know each other whilst we supported and inspired each other as our paintings developed their own personalities.

I have never met such a wonderful group of amazing artists! We spent the entire week just being ourselves and finding our uniqueness.

Painting by the pool!

At the end of the week, we had a mini exhibition in the garden where we painted. It was a hugely fulfilling moment to see what we each created … we each painted at least 3 paintings in the 5 days of actual painting days. Awesome!

I left Amed not only with a new confidence about my art but more precious is the wonderful friendships I have developed with my fellow Bloomers. I am so blessed.
