White Spots Gone After Zoom! : Dr Sheril Aida

Diyana came to our Klinik Pergigian Fauziah at the Menara Raja Laut branch one day for her routine dental check up. She came and see me as one of her colleague had recommended her to come here. During her visit, she told me that she was concern about the white spots on her teeth … She was also asking about teeth whitening and wanted to know if she is suitable for it.

Before Zoom Whitening - Mild Fluorosis Noted

White spots can be a result of numerous factors. In Diyana’s case, it is known as Fluorosis. Many of us have white spots or patches or streaks on our teeth. Some may be very obvious, often we may not even realize they exist. These white spots are normally a cosmetic concern and do not adversely affect the tooth’s health.

So I told her, “Diyana, basically Fluorosis is the overconsumption of fluoride during the tooth-forming years, frequently results in chalky white or brown spots, patches or lines on a tooth’s surface. Although brown discolorations respond well to bleaching, white discolorations remain unchanged, though the background may be lightened to make the white areas less noticeable”.

“So in your case, if we go for Zoom Whitening, what we would like to achieve is to make the white patches less obvious by lightening or whitens the background. One more thing, you have to bare in mind that teeth whitening results cannot be predicted”, I added.

“What do mean by that doctor?”, asked Diyana.

“We will measure your initial shade, and the final shade to see how many shades lighter you got.  But there’s no way to predict how many shades lighter your teeth will get beforehand and on top of that, what’s more important is that we want to get the background shade of your teeth to be as close as the white patches”, I explained.

Teeth Whitening works by removing stains from inside the teeth to bring them back to their natural color. The whitening process removes stains that we all accumulate over the years from coffee, tea, juice, soda, fruits, sauces, etc …  The final shade is the natural tooth color, which is unique for everyone. Some patients got as many as 8 shades lighter, while some of them got only 2 or 3 shades lighter. Thus, the only way to find out is to try the in-office teeth whitening for yourself.

“For best results it’s important to have a recent dental cleaning as the Zoom whitening gel cannot penetrate through plaque and calculus”, I told her again.

After listening to my explanation, Diyana is eager to go for it. We started off the procedure by doing dental cleaning. Then, her eyes, lips and gums are completely covered and protected throughout the entire procedure.

Zoom teeth whitening is a process that uses a 25% hydrogen peroxide gel, the gel is activated via a special UV light. The procedure consists of three or sometimes four 15-minute sessions.  A fresh layer of whitening gel is applied after each session as the old gel is removed from your teeth.

Immediate Results - Lighter Teeth Shades With White Spots Still Prominent

With Zoom Whitening, the results are instantaneous. You can see the result immediately after the procedure. In Diyana’s case, as we remove the stains from her teeth, the white spots became more prominent initially.

This was her reaction, “Doctor Sheril, why does the white spots became more obvious now?”.

“Oh, not to worry Diyana, after a few days the white spots will blend in a bit more. This is because, immediately after the whitening procedure the teeth becomes dehydrated,   as they’ve lost moisture”, I reassured her.

“We shall see a more stable result in one week time as the teeth will regain their moisture over the next several days”, I added.

Another important concern of our patients is teeth sensitivity during and after the whitening process. Sensitivity is a “zing,” or a “zap” that your tooth may feel during the procedure. While 90% of our patients complete the entire treatment, it’s important to understand that completing the three 15-minute sessions of zoom teeth whitening is not for everyone. We want you to be comfortable during and after the procedure. Thus, we monitor our patients closely and encourage them to let us know when they start feeling sensitivity. We provide you with a bell to ring so you can let us know when that happens. In our clinic, we can provide a sensitivity paste treatment before you heads out. It helps in soothing the tooth and relieving from sensitivity.  At home, we recommend applying sensitive toothpaste for 5-10 minutes as it can also help to relieve the sensitivity. Patients who experience sensitivity generally recovers after 24 hours.

Before Diyana leave the clinic, I told her regarding dietary restrictions that she has to follow. It is important because for the first 48 hours the pores in enamel are open, so they can absorb stains faster than before. “Therefore, as a rule of thumb, anything that stains a white shirt, will stain your teeth. So taking care of your diet for the first 48 hours is very crucial”, I emphasized.

“Alright Doctor, I understand that and will try my best”, claimed Diyana.

” Well then, I shall see you again in 1 week time”, I replied.

1 Week After Zoom Whitening- White Spots Has Blend In

So as being claimed, the white spots had blend in with the background of the tooth and became less noticable.

Diyana was more satisfied now, as she could see the difference in the result in just 1 week time.

Despite having such a wonderful and satisfied patient as Diyana, it is in my best interest to let everyone know that whitening should only be done after patient had undergone thorough dental examination and assessment by a licence dental practitioner who have the skills, knowledge and training.

So do not risk it !
