Is Dentistry An Art ?: Dr. Dini

Art. what is the definition of art? According to Wikipedia Art is a diverse range of human activities involving the creation of visual, auditory or performing artifacts (artworks), which express the creator’s imagination, conceptual ideas, or technical skill, intended to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.  It means whatever the artist intends it to mean, and this meaning is shaped by the materials, techniques, and forms it makes use of, as well as the ideas and feelings it creates in its viewers . Art is an act of expressing feelings, thoughts, and observations.

With that definition, do you think dentistry is an art ? Do you see your dentist as an artist? Well, from my perspective, dentistry is a combination of art and science. Dentistry works on the principle to beautify things and at the same time restore the normal function of teeth.

I do understand that when you go to your regular dental clinic and receive the normal scaling and filling treatment, it’s hard to imagine dentistry as an art. However, when you are unhappy with your smile, you need more than just a dentist to give you the gleaming smile you desire. You need an artist. Turning a flawed smile into something beautiful requires a dentist with an artistic eye.

Here is the latest example I would like to share with you. I crafted this patient’s desired smile using Fiber Reinforced Composite Bridge. First, I extracted the badly broken tooth and stop the bleeding. Then I proceeded to sculpted the tooth using multiple shades of composite resin material to match the surrounding teeth color and structure. This is one of the complex cases I ever did. Because it was a front tooth that involved, I had to make sure the midline is correct, the shape and color of the tooth match. Otherwise, it will look weird. After all as the saying goes; ‘ If our eyes are the window to our soul, then our smile is the front door’. After 2 hours of reinventing and scuplturing his tooth, this was the result .

The before and after look.

So..yes, to answer your question, a dentist is also an artist. We do our best and put our heart and soul to give the best possible treatment to our patients. Also to improve the aesthetics of the patient and gives them the confidence to smile without any second thoughts .

Love,
