Broken tooth! -Dr. Damalis

A broken tooth is a frightening experience to say the least, and many people are left wondering if their tooth can be fixed or has to be removed.

Madam M lives in Brunei and has been referred to us by her son. She came to KL to celebrate Hari Raya with her children and will be leaving for home in a few days time.

Madam M complained of pain on one of her lower teeth after it broke a few weeks back. Upon examination, we found that the tooth fractured up to almost the gum level.

All the treatment options were laid out and after considering the pros and cons of each option, Madam M decided to proceed with extraction of the tooth, followed by an immediate Fibre Reinforced Composite (FRC) bridge due to the fact that she will be leaving KL in a few days.

The benefits of an immediate FRC bridge are :
1. Immediate replacement of missing tooth after extraction
2. Can be done in a single visit
3. Conservative/Does not harm other structures
4. Restores appearance, function and chewing efficiency

We proceeded with the extraction of the lower tooth, followed by the fabrication of the FRC bridge. It only took us about 3 hours (including the waiting time for the bleeding to arrest after extraction).

Immediately after extraction
Completed FRC bridge after bite check

Madam M was delighted to see that she “regained” a tooth on the spot and does not have to live a day without a missing front tooth. Enjoy your new smile Madam M!
