How to Take Care of Your Toddler’s Oral Hygiene During MCO-Dr Gwen Gan

How to Take Care of Your Toddler’s Oral Hygiene During MCO-Dr Gwen Gan

It has been 30 days since the MCO was enforced on March 18. How have you been?

Since we spent our whole day at home, having good feast seems to be a norm and I realize that many of my friends are actually wonderful chef, along with many other hidden talents.  Bravo for all!

I am not a very talented chef, but since there is much time spent at home, my fridge is also full with food and snacks.

One thing I realized recently is that my daughter’s snacking frequency increased by multiple fold during these stay at home time. However, her brushing frequency does not increase along.

To my horror, one day when I was checking her teeth, I noticed a black dot on one of her teeth.

It is not yet a tooth decay, but is alarming enough for me as a dentist.

Also, I start to get questions from parents asking about their toddler teeth condition.

Hence, I think I should write a blog to remind parents to not neglect their toddlers’ oral hygiene during MCO.

What can you do to take care of their little pearly white?

  1. Never forget to brush teeth twice a day (morning and before sleep)
  2. Use a fluoridated toothpaste
  3. Brush for good two minutes
  4. Floss their teeth once in a week at least to make sure no food stuck in between teeth
  5. Try to limit snacking frequency.
  6. Limit artificial sweetened food like candy or chocolate, replace with cheese, fruits or natural food like sweet potatoes or nuts.
  7. Brush or rinse mouth after any food intake.
Let’s brush teeth!
Happy Brushing Teeth!

The above are general guides that you could do to help maintain good oral health during MCO.

The actual oral hygiene instruction should be personalized and differ by individual, and best adviced by your dentist.

Do not forget to bring your toddler for a dental check up regularly to make sure their teeth are healthy.

I hope this is a good reminder for you amidst the busy routine of MCO.

Should you have any query, feel free to write to me  at ganshouwan@story.drfauziah.com, I am glad to assist and support you during this difficult time.

With this, I wish you all the best and stay home, stay safe.

Thank you.
