Correcting Young Kid Teeth Arrangement- Dr Gwen Gan

Most of the parents will look and assess if their kids needs orthodontic work (braces) after all the permanent teeth have erupted.

What most people do not know is that in certain condition a simple appliance at a young age can actually correct the problem and prevent complicated work to be done in the future.

Interceptive orthodontic treatment is treatment that help to remove any obstacle in jaw development and helps the jaw to develop in a natural and correct way.

Case Study

Anterior Cross Bite

This is a little boy at age 7 when his mum brings him for a cleaning and check up.

When I examined, I found out that two of his upper front teeth were trapped by the lower front teeth.

If this condition was left behind, he will become a true class III (reverse bite where the lower jaw become much longer than the upper jaw)

Another problem that could arise from this condition is gum problem of the lower front teeth.

From the picture above, you can tell that the two lower front teeth are much longer than other teeth.

This is because the teeth were pushed to the border of bone and some of the bone that were supposed to encircling the teeth were lost.

In other word, less bone is holding these teeth and hence weaker.

Orthodontic Appliance

After discussion with the mother, I made an removable appliance for him.

Six months following the treatment and we managed to correct the cross bite.

From now on, his upper jaw is free and a healthy jaw growth is awaiting for him.

This picture compares the bite before and after treatment. The bite had been corrected.

I am grateful that my small gesture made a huge impact to his life.

I love my job!

Should your kid has similar condition or you suspect that his/her teeth arrangement is weird, please bring him/her for a check up immediately to understand what is the best treatment for him/her.
